3:34AM: FATAL STRUCTURE FIRE / MURDER @ 3300BLK SHADY TRAIL DRIVE, TYLER - 11/18/2024At approximately 3:34 AM, on Monday, November 18th, 2024, Tyler Fire, Tyler Police, and UT Health EMS Unit 922 were dispatched to a residential structure fire on Shady Trail Drive near the North West corner of Loop 323.Within minutes Engine 6 arrived on scene, reporting a single-story residence with active fire. Engine 1 arrived shortly after, securing a water supply for Engine 6. A neighbor had previously knocked on the door but received no response. Unsure if anyone was inside the home, Truck 1 began a primary search.Around 4:00AM, a male identified as Gregory Bargaineer, a 67-year-old from Tyler, walked into the lobby of the Smith County Jail and made statements about an incident involving gasoline and an argument with his girlfriend, a resident of the home. He turned himself in and was detained by law enforcement. As firefighting operations progressed, crews encountered heavy fire conditions throughout multiple areas of the structure, complicating suppression efforts. Unbeknownst to firefighters at the time, gasoline had been spread inside the home, intensifying the fire’s behavior and making suppression more difficult. Coordinated interior attacks and searches by Engine 6, Engine 1, and Truck 1 were in place before Command noticed roof sag, signs of imminent roof collapse, forcing firefighters to exit the structure. After gaining control of the fire, crews discovered a female body in a back bedroom. Her identity is being investigated. She has been sent for autopsy.Gregory Bargaineer was later interviewed by Tyler Police Department Crimes Against Persons Detectives and Tyler Fire Investigators. Based on evidence obtained during the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued on Gregory Bargaineer for Murder with a $750,000 bond. He was booked into the Smith County Jail. The investigation is still ongoing.
